Good Night, Sweet Prince and Flights of Angels Sing Thee to Thy Rest

Sunrise, sunset. Sunrise, sunset.

Swiftly fly the years

One season following another

Laden with happiness and tears.

-- Fiddler on the Roof

As the days march inexorably onward we are all, brewers and beer lovers alike, required to accept that things will change. Recipes will be tweaked to accommodate variations in hop varietals. Styles that once ruled the bar scene will fade away. New styles, with new innovations or ingredients, will dazzle drinkers across the country. American craft beer has always maintained a delicate balance between maintaining brewing tradition and inventing the future of beer. One thing craft beer does not do is sit still.

But that does not always mean that change comes easy. To this end, it is rather bittersweet for Mother’s to announce the discontinuation of one of our original beers, Towhead. Our little blonde baby, Towhead is one of the Mother’s originals: conceived, developed, brewed, trialed, tinkered with, and brewed again in the heady first stages of planning a craft brewery. From its German inspiration in traditional Kolsch beers to its edge of Midwestern wheat ale, Towhead is a crisp drinking beer that we’ve always been proud of. So why on earth would we stop brewing it now?

There is no simple answer. Certainly craft brewers are an independent lot and many decisions about the beers we brew are made from the gut. We brew beers we want to drink. The ones we’re putting down pint after pint, night after night. But beer is a conversation. We’re not the only ones drinking our labor of love. And if we’re not listening to the beer drinkers out in the world, then we’re doing it wrong. Sometimes those beer lovers speak quite clearly. Even if what they say is not what you want to hear. As a brewery, if you’re not changing, then you’re not growing. So we made the tough call to cease production on Towhead to make room in our production for new beers.

None of which is to say that we’ve abandoned the profile that made us love Towhead to begin with: crisp, clean, and damn refreshing. Mother’s remains committed to offering beers and styles for all beer drinkers out there. If you are a Mother’s lover who is going to miss that cold glass of Towhead after an afternoon of August gardening, you won’t be missing it long. We’ve got beers fermenting right now that will deliver the refreshment you crave. They may not be Towhead (and let’s face it, nothing ever will be) but they will be there for you when settle in with friends around the firepit or at the bar. So here’s to looking forward, while always honoring your past. Thanks for all the good times, Towhead. We’ll raise a pint of something new for you real soon.
